- I've been using the Littler Robot Eco Edition for about a week. Let me say that first off the notion that your house will smell better is rubbish. This thing stinks like any other litter box. The waste isn't delivered into some hermetically sealed container where the smell doesn't escape. It's just a plastic bin.
It also still requires work just like any other litter box. I take that back, not like any other litter box. You have to clean the dome, you have to clean the rubbish bin.
Does this save you money? I don't think so. It uses electricity which a normal litter box does not use. It also still uses litter. And so far it seems to use more litter. Although my cats are still curious so they maybe contributing to the litter issue. It uses electricity.
There's also the potential for break down. And purchasing the replacement parts are going to be more than buying a new litter box.
On the positive side I haven't had any mechanical/electronic issues. The thing does clean itself. But overall I can think of plenty of things that are a better value.
- first, let me say that as i write this review, the base for my litter robot is gone for repair! not sure why, but i think the gear that rotates the globe has just gotten a bit worn from all the use and/or got off track..that being said, even if i have to buy another new one at $350, I WILL DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT!!!
why, you may ask, am i giving it 5 stars? because it is worth it's weight in gold and more!!
here's how it works:
basically, kitty gets in and does her business and gets out.. (there is a weight sensor that tells the unit when a cat has entered)..there is also a silent timer and after 7 minutes, the big globe slowly rotates, emptying the poo/clumped pee into a drawer housed within the base (the litter goes into another side compartment and is returned into the globe on the rotation back, minus the waste).
why i love it:
1) it empties into the drawer after each use (which makes my 2 cats happy to have a cleaner potty each time so they don't have to find a spot to use)
2) i don't have to worry about a mess to clean up after a weekend away or ask someone to scoop litter for me while i'm on vacation.
3) i have 2 cats and i only need to empty the drawer a couple of times a week (compared to twice daily scooping? are you serious? :-) )))
4) it's pretty roomy inside ( i have an 18lb cat and a 16lb cat and they both get in and out very easily)
5) very little odor because the waste is in the drawer underneath the globe.
6) you don't need to use any special litter (just make sure it is CLUMPING litter NOT the pine stuff)).
7) it is very safe and will even stop turning if a cat re-enters the unit after the globe has begun to cycle. PLEASE NOTE this unit is not really meant for kittens because of the weight sensor. please see the company's site for more details if you have a smaller cat or kitten!!
8) the customer service for the litter robot company is great. they are kind of hard to get on the phone (who isn't these days right?), but they do return your call asap!
hope this helps! buy this unit!! it's definitely worth the price tag. you won't regret it and your furkids will thank you! :-) Oh, btw, i bought mine refurbished and it worked purfectly for the first 3 years or so that i've had it.
- I had another brand before and usually always had problems. My first one (only had it 5 years) the rake got caught on the wires and pull them out. My second one the rake kept on breaking I had to replace it about 4 times in the 3 years I had it. I would turn it off when I went on vacation and have the person watching my cats scoop the box (I still have 3 spare rakes). After it totaling breaking the first year and got a replacement one ...and by the way never really worked very well. So far so GRRRReat with the Litter Robot. My 4 cats seem to love it, I only have to empty the waste bag once a week. I don't waste litter AT ALL like the other brand did. I am totally and gratefully satisfied with this product. I work at a Veterinary office and I have and will continue to recomend this product.
